NEW CD; THE GHOST OF UNCLE JOE

The revolutionary new album from madcap marxists The Kremlinaires includes chilling tales from the haunted heart of the Kremlin, triumphant anthems from the Great Patriotic War, a call to arms to all true followers of Lenin, and the Cold War thriller, There’s a riot goin’ on (in Gulag no 9). The rich musical palette of Soviet Swing and Bolshevik Boogie is now augmented with the thrilling “World (Domination) Music” sounds of gypsy jazz, klezmer, down-home western swing and Balkan Beat. Proclaimed "compulsorarily available in the Soviet Peoples' Republic of Great Britain" comes a recording from Chris Haigh's seven piece "Soviet Swing" band The Kremlinaires. The band members filter a collective of musical styles through pairs of pinko com(unist)ic sunglasses and give klezmer, gypsy jazz, , swing, fifties American rock and roll and eighties Britich punk rock style the real politburo treatment. The song lyrics and the musical accompaniments are both funny and intelligent- a country hoe-down on that workers' paradise "Animal Farm" where some are more equal than others, a Stalinist interpretation of Sly and the Family Stone's Riot Goin on (In Gulag no 9) and Let's face the music (and Gdansk) may suggest something of the flavour. Chris Haigh's comrades-in-bad more than master the various styles thrown at them and play together with great skill and panache- indeed you get the feeling that the whole project may be an attempt to throw off the shackles of straight-faced interpretations of these musical genres and shout Na Sdrovye! This CD makes brilliant listening and, I would guess, a live performance would really get those feet marching. Anyway, watch them in action on Youtube .-Geoff Ager Fiddleon Magazine
